How Acid Fume Scrubbers Work

An acid fume scrubber removes acidic mists, vapors, and droplets from exhaust air before that air is discharged. Contaminated air is drawn through a wet-packed bed, where it contacts a neutralizing solution that dissolves and neutralizes the acid. Clean air exits the stack, and the captured chemicals stay in the recirculating solution. This protects workers from hazardous fumes and prevents acid vapor from corroding nearby equipment.

Removal efficiency depends on the contact area between the air and the neutralizing solution. Modutek’s scrubbers use a high-surface-area packing material from Lantec, so the fumes pass over a large wetted surface as they move through the bed. This design achieves a removal rate of up to 99 percent for acid fume chemicals.

The acid fume scrubbers offered by Modutek remove chemical mists and droplets from the exhaust air of installations using acids for etching and cleaning. The high chemical removal rate of the scrubbers lets manufacturers and research labs avoid discharging of hazardous fumes that can harm workers and corrode equipment. The wide range of air handling capacities of Modutek’s scrubbers and the company’s custom design capabilities make it possible to meet a wide variety of needs for customers with particular applications.
Modutek’s acid fume scrubbers work by exposing contaminated air to a chemical solution. The acid in the air dissolves in the solution and is neutralized. Exposing the acid fumes to as large a surface area of neutralizing solution as possible is the key to an efficient operation. In Modutek’s fume scrubber design, the fumes pass over a wet packed bed. The packing material is made by industry leader Lantec and has an extremely high surface area. The packing material surfaces are covered by the neutralizing solution resulting in a removal rate for the fume chemicals that can reach 99 percent.

High efficiency and low cost of ownership are supported by a flexible design and a complete set of operator-friendly features. The air-handling capacity of the fume scrubbers ranges from 500 to 25,000 CFM, and water consumption is minimized through a water recirculating system with pH control. Construction is of black polypropylene with UV protection and with a NEMA 4 control cabinet. The scrubbers are built with double containment for extra safety and a bottom drain for ease of maintenance. A complete set of flow and pressure gauges, combined with scrubber water level control and metered water discharge, gives the operator a complete picture of the process. A demister section is included, and structural and seismic certification is available.

Acid Fume Scrubber FAQs

What Is the Difference Between a Fume Scrubber and a Fume Hood?

A fume hood captures and contains fumes at the source and routes them away from the operator. A fume scrubber treats the captured exhaust, neutralizing the acid before the air is discharged. A hood moves the fumes, a scrubber cleans them, and the two work together.

How Does a Packed Bed Scrubber Achieve a 99 Percent Removal Rate?

Removal efficiency depends on the extent of contact between the contaminated air and the neutralizing solution. The packed bed provides a large wetted surface area, so acid fumes spend more time in contact with the solution as they pass through, increasing the removal rate to as much as 99 percent.

How Much Water Does an Acid Fume Scrubber Use?

Modutek’s scrubbers use a recirculating water system with pH control, so the same solution is reused rather than drained. Water consumption is kept low, with only metered discharge used to refresh the solution.

What Air Handling Capacity Is Available?

Modutek builds acid fume scrubbers with air-handling capacity ranging from 500 to 25,000 CFM. The correct capacity is matched to the process or facility’s total exhaust volume during the design stage.

Can an Acid Fume Scrubber Be Certified for Seismic Requirements?

Yes. Structural and seismic certification is available for facilities that require it. The certification is specified during the design stage so the unit meets local code for the installation site.
