Chemical Carts

How Chemical Carts Work

A chemical cart is a mobile unit that safely transfers chemicals from wet-process stations and other equipment into a holding tank on the cart. The used chemicals are then transferred to larger collection containers, where they are treated and neutralized onsite or handed to a disposal company. This allows a facility to move and dispose of used chemicals in accordance with local regulations without a fixed, plumbed-in system. Chemical carts are also called chemical collection carts, chemical delivery carts, or chemical pump carts.

The cart rolls up to a process station, and an on-board suction wand pumps the used chemicals into the cart’s tank. Used chemicals are stored in a Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved container, which is double-contained within the cart for safety. The cart runs on all-pneumatic operation, so no electrical power is required at the point of use.

Chemical Cart FAQs

What Is a Chemical Cart Used For?

A chemical cart moves used chemicals away from a process station without a fixed plumbing line. It pumps chemicals from wet-process equipment into an onboard holding tank and then transfers them to larger containers for on-site treatment or disposal. It gives a facility a mobile alternative to an in-house neutralization system.

Why Does a Chemical Cart Use Pneumatic Operation Instead of Electric?

The cart runs on all-pneumatic operation, so no electrical power is needed at the point of use. This removes the ignition risk posed by electrical equipment around solvents and acids, and lets the cart be used anywhere on the floor without an electrical hookup.

Can One Chemical Cart Handle More Than One Type of Chemical?

A single cart can support multiple applications. For acid applications, the standard polypropylene cart is used; for solvent applications, a stainless steel cart is available. The correct configuration is matched to the chemicals the facility runs.

How Are Used Chemicals Stored Safely on the Cart?

Used chemicals are stored in a Department of Transportation-approved container. That container is double-contained within the cart, and the holding tank has a high-level sensor with a pump interlock that stops filling before the tank is overfilled.

What Size Holding Tank Is Available on a Chemical Cart?

The standard cart uses a 5 to 25-gallon natural polypropylene holding tank. For larger volumes, the cart can be configured with a large-capacity holding tank that accommodates a 55-gallon drum.
