How Quick Dump Rinsers Improve Silicon Wet Etching Processes

How Quick Dump Rinsers Improve Silicon Wet Etching ProcessesEditor’s note: This article was originally published in December 2020 and was updated in October 2026 to add information on reduced DI water use from a related 2022 post.

When silicon wafers in a wet etching process need rinsing, quick dump rinsers provide fast and effective rinsing of chemicals and particles. In semiconductor fabrication lines at semiconductor manufacturers and research labs, silicon wafers are etched with chemicals. Once the required structures and current paths are etched into the silicon, the chemicals must be rinsed off to prevent continued etching. Modutek’s quick dump rinser uses deionized water to wash away all traces of chemicals while introducing no new sources of particle contamination. When rinsing is complete, the quick dump rinser drains rapidly. It combines excellent rinsing performance with fast processing and reduced particle counts.

What Makes a Quick Dump Rinser Efficient and Effective?

Modutek has applied state-of-the-art engineering techniques to design a quick dump rinser that reduces de-ionized water consumption, shortens rinse time, and reduces particles. The large trap door and the contoured rinsing vessel shorten dump times and promote laminar flow to rinse away contaminants. The machined dump door has no seals or gaskets that could trap particles, and the tank’s smooth polypropylene construction ensures it is not a source of new particle contamination.

When the silicon wafers are placed in the rinser, de-ionized water jets rinse the chemicals from the wafer surfaces. The tank fills, bringing the rinsed contaminants to the surface where they leave the tank through the overflow weir. A nitrogen bubbler generates gas bubbles that rise through the water, removing additional contaminants and particles. At the end of the rinse cycle, the trap door at the bottom of the tank opens to quickly drain the water. The whole process is fast, and rinsing is complete without added contamination.

Why Reduced DI Water Use Matters in Wet Processing

Rinsing repeats after many chemical steps in a wet process, so the deionized (DI) water used in each rinse adds up across a production line. Reducing that consumption lowers operating costs and reduces environmental impact, and it matters most where water conservation is a regulatory or supply concern. Modutek designs its quick dump rinsers to use less DI water while keeping the fast operation and low particle counts described above.

Design Features That Reduce DI Water Use

Several design choices work together to lower the amount of DI water each rinse needs.

  • Contoured Bottom. The rinser bottom is contoured around the wafer cassette, reducing the water volume needed to fill the tank on each dump cycle.
  • Recipe-Based Cycle Counts. Cycle counts are set for each process recipe, so the rinse can match the chemistry being removed instead of running a fixed number of cycles.
  • Custom Tank Sizes. Quick dump rinsers can be built around a specific cassette footprint or wafer size, which avoids oversizing the tank and the water needed to fill it.

Quick Dump Rinsers Provide Substantial Benefits

Quick dump rinsers can improve production line performance and output quality. Modutek has designed its quick dump rinser to address wet process manufacturing concerns, including water use, rinsing effectiveness, particle counts, and timing. When quick dump rinsers remove chemicals and particles quickly and effectively, throughput can increase, and product rejection rates can drop.

Fast rinsing reduces de-ionized water use. Modutek’s 360-degree overflow weir lets contaminated water exit the tank easily and reduces particle entrapment. Dual overhead spray manifolds and low-misting nozzles improve rinsing performance with even spray distribution. The nitrogen gas bubbler and tank design promote an even flow around the wafers, and the large dump door drains the tank completely in seconds.

Key benefits include reduced costs, fewer product defects, and faster production line operation. Reduced de-ionized water use lowers costs, and an optional reclaim system can result in additional savings.

The tight packing of semiconductor structures and their decreasing size make the process increasingly sensitive to particle contamination. Even the tiniest particle can cause defects in the final product. Modutek’s quick dump rinser is designed to reduce particle counts, which can lower product failure rates.

Rinsing is required after many wet-process production steps, and any time saved with a quick dump rinser multiplies by the number of rinses in the semiconductor fabrication line. The Modutek quick dump rinser delivers these benefits by addressing overall semiconductor manufacturing requirements.

Using a Quick Dump Rinser on Its Own or Within a Process Line

A quick dump rinser can operate as a stand-alone unit or be integrated into a silicon wet etching process line. The drop-in design installs into wet stations and, in a line, can improve overall performance by lowering costs and reducing defective products.

Meeting Tighter Process Requirements While Controlling Cost

Manufacturers are working with higher product densities, smaller silicon structures, and increasing regulation of chemical and water use. Rinsing performance, DI water consumption, and particle counts all affect how well a line meets those requirements. When comparing rinsers, looking beyond purchase price to water use, throughput, and reject rates gives a more complete view of total cost of ownership.
